The Netherlands wants to become more sustainable and reduce nitrogen emissions. The urgency is especially great in the construction sector. Strukton Power’s battery container can help with this. It is an energy storage system that provides temporary power for electrical (construction) equipment, where and when it is needed. The components of the system are made by Strukton itself or they are purchased in Europe. The prototype is now available and will run its first official service in Deurne in mid-June.
Battery energy storage systems – often referred to as battery containers – are not new. Many parties are thinking about the possibilities of storing overcapacity of (green) electricity for later use. This is also happening within Strukton: for example, there is also a project for an electric locomotive with a battery container. So there is already a lot of knowledge and expertise within the organization regarding energy storage and battery systems.
The conversations clearly showed that there is a particular need for flexibility: a small battery container that is easy to move around to supply energy where you need it. In addition, the battery system must be able to withstand a knock, for example to be used on construction sites or along the rails. It must also be able to be charged from different sources, with the interesting new option: the overhead line. As a team, we then put our heads together to bring commerce and technology together within one concept: the Rugged Mobile BESS (RMB).
After the transfer, a technical project manager and a team of eight engineers started working on the technical elaboration of the RMB. Because there is always a tension between sales and technology, the wishes of the customer and the market versus what is technically possible, Strukton Power made agreements from day one about what the RMB should be able to do now and what expansion possibilities there would be in the future. Otherwise, it will never be possible to realize a prototype within a short time.
With the RMB, Strukton Power is responding to the need in all sectors, and the construction sector in particular, to reduce CO2 emissions by working more and more with electrical equipment. In this way, the organization helps to accelerate sustainability.
